Earth Force has received the prestigious 2019 Programs That Work Award from the Virginia Mathematics & Science Coalition (VMSC). The award recognizes exemplary mathematics, science, and integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs for which there is evidence of a positive impact on student or teacher learning.
The Virginia Mathematics & Science Coalition Programs that Work Awards recognizes effective student and teacher educational programs operating in the Commonwealth. The Coalition reviews exemplary programs for which there is evidence of a positive impact on student or teacher learning. Proposals are evaluated on the extent to which they:
- Represent innovative, exemplary programs that have proven effective with all students or teachers;
- Demonstrate the important science concept skills or processes students and teachers learned as result of the programs; and
- Document impact on teaching and learning.
Earth Force was recognized for its unique combination of the best of civic engagement, environmental education, and STEM. Youth work together through educator facilitation to design and implement a project to explore root causes and address a policy or practice related to the environmental issue that they identify in their community. Earth Force’s focus on civic engagement helps learners to become active participants in their communities by conducting balanced research, building strong community partnerships, and making decisions as a democratic group.
Since inception in 1994, Earth Force has trained over 4,000 educators who have used our materials to engage 300,000 students across the country. Earth Force provides professional development to educators in Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax County who want to integrate civic and environmental action into their classroom.
Programs That Work Awards have been awarded by the VMSC for more than ten years. VMSC is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to achieving excellence in mathematics and science education for Virginia’s K-12 and higher education students.
