I am traveling today, and everywhere I go I see the same headline: Trump 49% / Clinton 48%. But those numbers don’t reflect the reality of American civic society. Just about 59,450,000 voted for Mr. Trump – which is roughly 26% of the 231 million eligible voters in the U.S.
Whether you are excited about Mr. Trump’s victory or nervous about what it portends – we all should be concerned about the number of our fellow citizens who are not convinced that they can or should participate in the most basic form democracy.
At Earth Force, we believe that when only 58% of the electorate participates in major elections, we have a lot of work to do. The day after our latest election, we are rolling up our sleeves and reaching out to educators across the country to make sure as many middle schoolers as possible have the chance to participate in the most basic unit of American democracy: local government.
From this experience, young people learn the value of their voice in local decision making and build the habits of citizenship – over 70% of our students say they will continue to be involved in their communities after leaving our program.
So, join with us – let’s make sure that every young person builds the habit of civic engagement from a young age.
