The Earth Force youth at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments partnered with the Master Gardeners and adults in their community to design, plant and harvest their first vegetable garden. They put the raised beds together, mixed the soil and buried soaker hoses and then planted herbs, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, radishes, flowers and strawberries. They built a tee-pee and lattice structures for their plants to crawl on. Their press conference and ribbon cutting ceremony announced the garden to the community.
While they harvested the garden and enjoyed sharing the bounty with their families, they learned about scarecrows, food chains, composting, dried flowers and garden invaders. They toured other gardens, enjoyed journaling in their “magic spots”; they also participated in drumming circles and sage ceremonies.
They look forward to planting some fall crops and planning who will take care of the garden next year. They have worked hard to educate the residents of the John E. Horan Garden Apartments about the benefits of gardening and hope that more residents will have community gardens next spring.
