The second semester, Danielle Baltes continued with another group of students from the Pfeiffer-Burleigh CHAMPS Program. Twelve students in grades fourth through seventh participated in this after school program project that was on Invasive Plants. The students were led in discussion by Ms.Baltes and college students from Edinboro University on dangers of invasive plants in the community, especially on Presque Isle. To learn even more, Bonnie Panghietti, a master gardener, gave a presentation to the group. The students decided there was a need to educate the community about this issue. They designed a flyer to do this. With the help of WJET and Oprah’s Big Give grant, the students were able to start a garden of native plants at their school. To further spread the word and to highlight their success with this project, the students with the help of Stacie Wolbert, teacher at the Edinboro University created and implemented a teacher workshop at the Northwestern Pennsylvania Middle School Association Conference.
